Ashok Salwan accessed the camp s services throughout the week. As an Indigenous person experiencing homelessness in downtown Winnipeg, he says one of the toughest things is feeling like there are no Native men that actually really have what it takes to actually stand with us, and not against us. That s one of the worst things.
Salwan said the main thing he appreciated about the Community Caring Camp was that it was a safe space where First Nations people were helping other First Nations people, without judgment, simply because they made the commitment.

In the days since the effort was announced, the Saskatoon Community Care Camp has already seen the pieces starting to fall into place.
People have been reaching out. The camp’s volunteer list was at 20 people on Friday, and a steady stream of blankets, homemade quilts and winter gear is flowing in.

The Bear Clan Patrol has taken a leadership role helping people seeking refuge from the current extreme cold in Winnipeg Transit bus shelters, thanks in part to a funding grant from two city councillors.
Members of the volunteer organization have been offering a warm place for the night, some food, and something warm to drink during these brutal winter temperatures. The Bear Clan Patrol patrols the North End from Wednesday to Sunday as well as West End, West Broadway and Point Douglas.
