SASKATOON In a matter of two weeks, an idea about a teepee and open-pit fires serving the community as an outdoor shelter went from dream to reality for a Saskatoon group. “We’re hoping we can help everybody that needs it,” said Daina Kary, organizer and member of the Saskatoon Community Caring Camp. “I feel like the community has really come together and made this a reality for us.” Borrowing the idea from a Winnipeg organization, a team of students from the First Nations University of Canada mobilized to fill the gap and provide homeless people a warm place to go when the city’s various warm-up shelters closed for the evening.

The Saskatoon Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) is asking the City of Saskatoon to look at designating a civic facility as an emergency overnight shelter during the winter.
Lyn Brown, SHIP s executive director, said there are just not enough overnight spaces available in the city on extreme cold nights.

Securing a location, finding volunteers and accumulating some warm winter clothing are among them.

In the days since the effort was announced, the Saskatoon Community Care Camp has already seen the pieces starting to fall into place.
People have been reaching out. The camp’s volunteer list was at 20 people on Friday, and a steady stream of blankets, homemade quilts and winter gear is flowing in.
