A day before the government s eighth round of talks with protesting farm unions, thousands of farmers are participating in a tractor rally on the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways Thursday in a “rehearsal” for 26 January, when they will move into the National Capital from Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday criticised the Narendra Modi government over the ongoing farmer protests. She reiterated her party’s call to withdraw the three new farm laws.
Farmers protesting against the laws held a tractor rally on Thursday morning on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway in Haryana as well as the Western Peripheral Expressway, which starts at Ghaziabad and ends in Noida.
The tractor rally was organised by Sanyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella of 40 farmer unions. The rally was planned for Tuesday, however, bad weather forced the farmers to defer it by a day.
The protesting farmers have served an ultimatum on the Narendra Modi government, vowing to march into Delhi on January 26 and stage their own Kisan Gantantra Divas Parade without disrupting the official showpiece event if the three new farm laws are not repealed.
The farmers, picketing the national capital’s borders for the past 38 days, made it clear their movement would remain peaceful and that there would be no going back. They added that they had lost faith in the Prime Minister’s words.
“Either repeal the three central farm acts or use force on us to evict us. The time has come for decisive action here and we have chosen January 26 because Republic Day represents the supremacy of the people and also because we would have demonstrated patiently and peacefully at Delhi’s borders for two full months in extreme weather conditions by then,” the coordination committee of the Sanyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) said on Saturday.

Scores of farmers affiliated to BKU (Lok Shakti) rang in the new year at the Dalit Prerna Sthal and had bonfires to brave the chilling cold of the night.
