Calagiones support Sussex County Land Trust

Land trust board of directors Chair Casey Kenton said the funds will be used to support efforts to build a trailhead for the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail at the trust’s Stephen P. Hudson Park at the intersection of Route 9 and Coolspring Road. The trust has also formed an exploratory committee to research a pedestrian bridge over Route 9 as part of the trail.

In Delaware’s Cape Region and farther out in Sussex County, the impressive and expanding system of trails beckons to ever-increasing numbers of people ready and willing to get outside for walking and bicycling.

Ocean Atlantic Companies support Sussex Land Trust

At the Dec. 17 check presentation held at Covered Bridge Trails in Lewes are (l-r) Sussex County Councilman Irwin “I.G.” Burton, land trust representative for the county, Ocean Atlantic Chairman Preston Schell, Land Trust Chairman Casey Kenton and Ocean Atlantic President Tom Tipton. The donations came from one-half percent of gross lot sales at Covered Bridge Trails near Lewes ($85,300) and The Farm at Truitt Homestead near Rehoboth Beach ($67,500). Schell said when he and Craig Hudson formed the the land trust 19 years ago, it was his goal to lead by example and get developers to support the land trust by setting aside funds from the sale of lots.

Delaware nonprofit working on new Sussex Co pedestrian and bike bridge

47abc December 23, 2020 SUSSEX CO., Del. – A Delaware nonprofit is sharing details about a new pedestrian and bike bridge that they’re hoping will be built over Route 9 in Sussex County. The bridge would connect the Lewes to Georgetown Trail that currently passes through the intersection of Cool Spring Road and Route 9. The Sussex County Land Trust expects this to become a publicly funded project with private sector support. They believe if this bridge is built it would help alleviate some traffic safety concerns and possibly make this trail system more of a destination as the area continues to grow. “In that area, you see a lot of the neighborhoods that have been recently connected by this expansion, they’re really using those trails so we would expect the same thing here. Folks nearby to be getting on this trail and maybe some people driving to this location to literally bike intro Rehoboth to Lewes, that whole trail network,” says Mark Chura, the Executive Director o
