A PROJECT has been launched in memory of a Keighley councillor to help Malawian villagers access clean water. An online fundraising page has been set-up by Muhammad Ibraheem, from Keighley, so a desperately-needed borehole can be provided for a rural community in the south-east-African country. The campaign, being staged in conjunction with Green Crescent Aid UK, aims to raise £2,000. The initiative is in memory of Keighley Central councillor and former Lord Mayor of Bradford Abid Hussain, who died on Christmas Eve. “Councillor Hussain was a selfless individual who worked tirelessly to help anyone in need,” said Mr Ibraheem. “He served not only in the UK, but internationally, with several charities to fundraise and help people devastated by natural events and those in extreme poverty.
PLANS for a new retail development in the heart of Keighley have been approved - and a new Aldi at the heart of the development is due to open next year. This morning members of Bradford Council s Regulatory and Appeals approved the discount retailer s plans to transform the long empty Alexandra Works site, off East Parade. The development will include a new Aldi store, another large retail store, a drive thru coffee shop and three smaller shops. The plans first went before the Committee in November, but members deferred their decision, and asked Aldi to go back to the drawing board after raising concerns about the scheme s design and layout.
30 = Wharfedale (47) The scourge of fly-tipping has been highlighted in the Telegraph & Argus on many occasions, with recent incidents including piles of rubbish being dumped in Holme Wood and Bierley, as well as close to the Heaton Woods beauty spot. Last week, a pile of what appeared to be a broken up piece of furniture could be seen in the grounds of Horton Park. Matt Edwards, a Community Campaigner for the Green Party for the Tong ward, said the situation in the south of the city in particular “seems to be getting worse”. “Fly tipping causes misery for people living by some of the worst hotspots and we have to make life as uncomfortable as possible for the people who dump rubbish in our local environment. We’ve got to be clear that this is not a victimless crime,” he said.
