No fixers for Cubbon Park’s broken shelter ByY Maheswara ReddyY Maheswara Reddy / Updated: Jul 21, 2021, 06:04 IST Over a month ago, one of the three rain shelters at Cubbon Park came crashing down after a tree branch fell on it during heavy rain. Now, visitors at the park are alleging that the Horticulture Department is not showing any interest in restoring the shelter. The rain shelters were constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 20 lakh in 2014 amid opposition from environmentalists. Earlier, the Horticulture Department had defended its decision stating that the shelters would benefit visitors, especially senior citizens during monsoon. However, the department now seems to be lacking interest in fixing the damaged shelter located a few hundred meters away from the Chama Raja Wadiyar statue.

The plan is to plant medicinal plants to set up a herbal garden for the benefit of thousands of walkers and visitors. The Bengaluru Smart City Limited is expected to develop one acre of land in the park into a herbal garden.

Cubbon Park walkers’ forum set to stage protest after Century Club members stall Smart City work; club members rue exit gate being blocked Cubbon Park Walkers’ Association has planned to carry out a protest against the Century Club on Wednesday after they allegedly stopped the ongoing Smart City work in front of the club entrance inside the park. However, the club says that they were not given any notice or a letter regarding the Smart City work or the exit gate being shut permanently. Dr Umesh Kumar, president of the walkers’ association, said that the Century Club has other gates, not just the one inside Cubbon Park. He said, “The club members can use the other gates but however, they insist on using this one. We are looking forward to the Smart City work being completed inside the park so that it becomes more pedestrian and cycle-friendly.”

This decision of the government, taken on November 21, 2020, was submitted to the High Court in a contempt of court petition filed by Cubbon Park Walkers’ Association. The Association had alleged that the government had not considered its representation to ban traffic within Cubbon Park despite a direction by the High Court in October last year.
