Sara Shamma’s UK show hits out at modern slavery with striking colours 16 hours ago Muhammad Yusuf, Features Writer Modern Slavery, an exhibition of paintings by London-based Syrian artist Sara Shamma, will be shown at Stockwood Discovery Centre, Luton, UK in August and September 2021. It is the result of Shamma’s 2019 research-focussed residency at King’s College London, where she was based within the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), working closely with Dr Siân Oram and in partnership with the Helen Bamber Foundation. Dr Oram is Senior Lecturer in Women’s Mental Health at the IoPPN. As part of her residency, Shamma conducted interviews with women who have lived experience of modern slavery, as well as with academics and experts in the field. The resulting figurative work considers the meaning of survival, endurance and recovery from the survivors’ perspectives.

Shelagh Casebourne was praised by the judges on the show but lost out to a professional in the competition to win a commission worth £10,000. Despite this, she said: “I think the experience has already changed me.” Mrs Casebourne, an amateur oil painter, was one of three competitors all women in the final of the latest Sky Arts programme, having qualified through several heats.

Stratford artist Andrew Field takes part in TV contest Landscape Artist of the Year  | Updated: 10:19, 22 January 2021 AS we face a bleak midwinter, with lockdown restrictions preventing us from exploring more than a few miles from home, a chink of escapism is being offered with a new series of Landscape Artist of the Year. Now in its sixth year, the competition show is hosted Stephen Mangan and Joan Bakewell and sees 36 gifted artists challenged to create works of art at some of the UK’s most spectacular settings. Contestants have four hours to complete their landscapes, which range from the classical grandeur of Britain’s historic houses, via idyllic rural scenes, to modern cityscapes. All will be under the watchful eye of the judges: art historian Kate Bryan, curator Kathleen Soriano, and renowned portrait artist Tai Shan Schierenberg.

Maltese artist featured in UK s Portrait Artist of the Year competition

Young Maltese artist Ġulja Holland was recently featured in an episode of SKY TV’s Portrait Artist of the Year, a British television competition which aims to find the best portrait painter every year through several rounds of regional competitions in different parts of the UK. Featured in the eighth episode of the currently airing seventh season, Holland painted a portrait of the acclaimed British actor Kwame Kwei-Armah within four hours, for which she was shortlisted as one of three artists at the end of the episode. Ġulja Holland (left) alongside her portrait. Holland is currently reading for a Masters in Painting at the Royal College of Art in London. Describing herself as an expressionistic painter, Holland spent most of her time contending with what colours to use in her painting, taking her time with framing and composition.
