Bambolim, Goa – In the early hours of May 12, Yunus Khan’s family watched helplessly as the 30-year-old coronavirus patient choked for breath while on a ventilator at the government-run Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in the coastal state’s Bambolim town. According to his 21-year-old brother Abdul Khan, Yunus had been making progress. “When we panicked and told the doctor, he told us to make a video and send it to the chief minister,” he told Al Jazeera. “His lungs had ruptured, so a ventilator was the only way to stabilise his condition.” A taxi driver from Ponda in South Goa district, Yunus was admitted to GMCH on May 10 after he was diagnosed with COVID-induced pneumonia. He passed away on May 15 in the hospital’s ICU ward.

ANI | Updated: May 17, 2021 19:28 IST North Goa (Goa) [India], May 17 (ANI): The Congress on Monday filed a police complaint against Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Health Minister Viswajit Rane, claiming that their sheer incompetence, mismanagement and criminal negligence led to the deaths of hundreds of COVID patients due to oxygen shortage . In the complaint filed at Agacaim police station, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Girish Chodankar stated that Sawant and Rane are solely responsible for the death of hundreds of people in Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) since April 2021 till date due to lack of oxygen. Thereby they have committed the offences under section 302, 304, 337, 338 read with 34, of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, Chodankar said.

Representative image PANAJI: The oxygen crisis at Goa Medical College (GMC) showed no signs of relenting as 13 more patients died on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, coinciding with yet another fluctuation in supply. Former deputy chief minister and Goa Forward Party president Vijai Sardesai said the 13 people died between 1am and 6am due to oxygen shortage, but GMC’s nodal officer Dr Viraj Khandeparkar told TOI that the “13 deaths were recorded between 8pm and 8am”. “A total of 75 people died in the dark hours of 1am to 6am over the past four nights. Basically, they have died due to oxygen shortage and mismanagement of oxygen supply in GMC,” Sardesai said.
