RETAIL: AN INTRODUCTION
Picture, if you still can, the packed dressing room of a Loehmann’s, in the days before that deep-discount clothing emporium, its stores for decades a New York shopping icon, shuttered its doors. The lighting is grey, fluorescent, unflattering. But never mind, it signifies the business at hand: the sacred and profane ritual of communal shopping.
Hooks and clothing racks line the dressing-room walls, but the focal point of the space is a wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling mirror, reflecting dozens of pirouetting, preening bodies. Women. Women of all shapes, colors, sizes and ages, cellulite visible, in various states of undress: pulling their legs through pants, shimmying the fabric of dresses down over their hips. They are talking to each other (even to strangers) as they don their apparel: “Mom, that looks great on you!” “Too roomy, honey.” “Does it come in another color?”
Heather Wooten has worked at Vintage 1889 Cafe for six years. She is, as they say, âthe chief cook and bottle washer.â While she performs the tasks of managing, hiring, serving, cooking and doing whatever needs to be done to keep things moving smoothly, she is also recognized as a great mixologist.
Wooten has worked in the restaurant industry since she was a teenager, and when she turned 21 years of age she took a six-week mixology course in Birmingham. âI view bartending as an art form,â said Wooten. âI love making signature drinks for many of the holidays.â Some of Wootenâs signature drinks are Love Potion #9, Malibu Breeze and Dirty Leprechaun.
Punto de Vistaâs 15th edition opts for a blended format
Dardara by Marina Lameiro
Itâs been a whole year since the Navarra International Documentary Film Festival, Punto de Vista, had the unhappy honour of being the last âreal-worldâ Spanish film festival before the COVID curse drove everything online. Now, itâs back for a 15th edition, having lost none of its edgy, alternative and boundary-pushing spirit. Running between 15 and 20 March, the festival will follow a blended format, with online screenings complementing events and activities scattered all across Pamplona. Those lucky enough to attend in person will find a brand-new venue: La Plaza, a big tent pitched front and centre outside the Baluarte, the festivalâs headquarters. Meanwhile, an online component will be delivered through the platform Festival Scope.
