Since their July 9 workshop that saw $116.9 million in 2022 budget requests from department heads, Comal County commissioners on Thursday will receive Judge Sherman Krauseâs recommended budget and discuss setting dates to approve it and the countyâs new tax rate.
The countyâs $107.9 million 2021 budget went into effect Jan. 1, funded by a 2020 combined tax rate of 35.8515 cents per $100 assessed property valuation. Last Thursday, July 22, the Comal Appraisal District, which assesses and certifies values of taxable properties, released its 2021 certified lists of net taxable values in the county, which rose by 14.44% since 2020, from $21.267 billion to $24.337 billion.
CAD values enable the county to project income and expenses for several county funds for general operations, jury, indigent health, debt service, road and bridge, and flood control.Â

SAN ANTONIO – With openings in the jail, on patrol, and in court security, Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward says it has been harder to fill open positions in the past year than it used to be.
“The problem has been just getting qualified applicants,” Soward said. “You know, sometimes you can get applicants, but we do a pretty thorough background check, and sometimes applicants don’t make it through the background check. So the quality of applicants has certainly dropped off, as well as the quantity of them.”

Comal County Sheriffâs Office investigators and Texas Rangers revealed few details into the probe into Friday morningâs shooting that hospitalized a Canyon Lake man and sent the accused shooter to the Comal County Jail.
âI donât know if there are any updates â I just know that itâs under investigation,â Sheriff Mark Reynolds said on Monday. âThere are a lot of details that theyâre still trying to uncover.
âIâm going to say that they are going to wait until such time as they get all the details.â
CCSO deputies and Canyon Lake Fire and EMS units responded to a home in the 1000 block of Real Lane in Canyon Lake at approximately 6:33 a.m. on Friday. Canyon Lake Fire Chief Darren Brinkkoeter said a 28-year-old man was in critical condition when he was transported by ground EMS to Seton Hays Hospital in Kyle.Â
