MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Close season for coarse fishing gets underway for 2021

Source: United Kingdom Government – Environment Agency The Environment Agency is reminding anglers the ‘close season’ for coarse fish in rivers comes into effect from Monday 15 March and runs until 15 June. The annual close season helps to protect fish stocks across England when they are spawning by preventing fishing for coarse fish in rivers, streams, drains and specified canals, as well as ‘sites of special scientific interest’ (SSSI) stillwaters. Throughout the close season, Environment Agency (EA) officers conduct patrols to enforce the close season. As part of Operation CLAMPDOWN, now in its ninth year, Angling Trust (AT) volunteers support the EA by keeping watch on riverbanks and reporting incidents to the 24-hour incident hotline.

The Natural England-led project proposes removing the majority of fish from the broad, a technique known as biomanipulation, which will allow water fleas to thrive feeding on algae and naturally clean the water. A petition was launched by Broads Angling Services Group, supported by the Angling Trust, against planned fish barriers at the entrance to Hoveton Great Broad.

Anglers have been urged by the RSPCA to take home all their tackle

ANGLERS using the Kennet & Avon Canal have been urged to make sure they take home all their tackle after a swan died as a result of being caught by a fishing hook and line. The male Mute Swan was seen swimming frantically around the Bradford on Avon Marina by concerned canal boaters on Tuesday and Wednesday last week while trying to remove the hook. Terry Higgins, 63, who moors at the marina, said: It was awful. He was just swimming around in circles and was obviously stressed and in a lot of pain. He was part of a pair that have been breeding here for many years and now his mate is calling for him. It s absolutely pitiful and sad to hear.
