Saturday Fort Bayard tours return after COVID hiatus

Tours of the Fort Bayard Museum, which are organized by the Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society, have been on hiatus for the past year, as much of the state shut down due to COVID-19 but as of two weeks ago, they are back on schedule, according to Douglas Dinwiddie, Ph.D., historian and tour guide. “We are happy to be back and running and welcoming visitors again,” he said. “We have lots of ambitious plans in the coming year or two.”

Break-in damage is limited

Luckily, damage seems to have been limited to the door, and there was no other apparent damage, or items missing from the museum’s interior. Sometime Friday night, the window was smashed in the back door to the museum at Fort Bayard located inside one of the Victorian-style homes that were built to house the officers of the fort. While the door was heavily damaged, that may have been the extent of the property loss, according to officials.
