A devastating fire at a St. Albert seniors’ care home last week began on a first floor patio, investigators have concluded as they continue to determine the exact cause.
Fire investigators have found the blaze started last Thursday on the ground floor of the Capital Mews continuing care centre and went undetected, allowing it to spread, reads a statement posted to the City of St. Albert’s website Friday. Seniors forced from their homes by a devastating fire at a St. Albert care home have started the process of being placed in new homes, says the facility’s operator.
Dozens of people were forced from their homes last Thursday as a fire tore through Citadel Mews West in the community north of Edmonton last Thursday. The blaze lit the night sky as it tore through the building while residents and neighbours watched firefighters battle the blaze. Everyone living at the home made it out of the building and most were temporarily moved to the St. Albert Inn.

A massive blaze at a St. Albert long-term care home has displaced more than 100 seniors who have been forced to find lodging elsewhere.
St. Albert RCMP received a call to assist the local fire service with a structure fire at the Citadel Mews located at 15 Erin Ridge Rd. around 8 p.m. on Thursday. A few minutes later, Edmonton Fire Rescue Service was called to lend support. Edmonton fire spokesman Rowan Anderson said the whole building had been evacuated.

A massive blaze at a north St. Albert seniors’ complex that displaced more than 160 residents overnight was extinguished Friday morning as support from the community poured in.
