The first day of jury selection concluded in the trial of Salamah Pendleton, a Grand Forks man suspected of fatally shooting his mother and a Grand Forks police officer and wounding a Grand Forks County Sheriff s deputy. No jurors have yet been seated. Public defender Steven Mottinger and Grand Forks County Assistant State s Attorney Ashlei Neufeld questioned nearly 40 prospective jurors on Tuesday, June 29. A new batch of prospective jurors will attend jury selection Wednesday and both groups will return to the courthouse on Thursday, when attorneys will begin to select the final jury.

Attorneys questioned dozens of potential jurors this (Tue) morning and afternoon, dismissing some who said they would have difficulty being impartial. Defense attorney Steven Mottinger asked many potential jurors about their opinions on firearms. Pendleton is facing two counts of murder…three counts of attempted murder… and single counts of criminal mischief…terrorizing…reckless endangerment…and possession with intent to deliver/manufacture marijuana. Authorities say Pendleton opened fire in a south Grand Forks apartment, killing Holte, who was 29.   Pendleton’s 61-year old mother was also killed.

KVRR Local News June 29, 2021 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (KVRR) – Jury selection is underway in the trial of the man accused of killing Grand Forks Police officer Cody Holte last year. Forty-two-year-old Salamah Pendleton is accused of shooting and killing Holte at an apartment in Grand Forks last May while authorities were serving an eviction notice. Pendleton is also accused of shooting and killing his 61-year-old mother, Lola Moore, in the same incident. After reviewing a state hospital evaluation, Northeast Central District Judge Don Hager determined that Pendleton is capable of proceeding with the trial. Pendleton faces two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, as well as criminal mischief, terrorizing, reckless endangerment, and possession with intent to deliver or manufacture marijuana.
