A LUDLOW volunteer says that she would love to have nothing to do. Ruth Davies, writes in the Hands Together Ludlow newsletter, that she wishes that the foodbank she leads could close because it was not needed but she does not see this happening. “The latest statistics show that 10 per cent of children in Ludlow are living below the poverty line, and one area is the second most deprived in Shropshire,” said Ms Davies, who works from the Rockspring Centre. “It is true that morally there should not be a need for food banks in 21st Century Britain, but when facing the need that we see on an almost daily basis, I feel compelled by the love of Christ to help people at their point of need.
Now it’s coming to Ludlow. They are increasingly popular around the UK and now David Burton, together with Hands Together Ludlow, hopes that before too long Ludlow can celebrate the opening of its very own Men’s Shed. He says that if you think of a ‘men’s shed’ as a collection of grumpy old men pottering about on an allotment then think again. Men’s Sheds, as part of the international movement, are similar to garden sheds – a place to pursue practical interests at leisure, to practice skills and enjoy making and mending. The big difference is that garden shed activities are often solitary in nature while Men’s Sheds are the opposite. While the activities are similar, including woodwork, DIY and general making and repair, they are performed by groups of people acting together. They’re about social connections and friendship building, sharing skills and knowledge, and laughter.
All the doses were used and not one was wasted as the programme continues to ramp up. The surgery was helped by volunteers from the Hands Together Ludlow group that is in action again following the tightening of restrictions. Services include the collection of prescriptions and other essential supplies for people who are shielding or cannot get out or do not have neighbours, friends and family who can help. There is a community helpline that people can call if they need assistance 01584 817250 and the group will try to help.
