New Cuilcagh climb being explored in West Cavan

Cavan County Council is to examine the feasibility of developing a walkway to the top of Cuilcagh from the southern side of the mountain at Bellavalley, Glangevlin similar to the extremly popular Boardwalk Trail on the Fermanagh side.
Conscious of the hype surrounding the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and the huge tourism spin-off, the potential to deliver such a landmark attraction has now been included in the Draft Cavan County Development Plan 2022-2028.
Fianna Fáil Cllr John Paul Feeley’s proposition, seconded by Peter McVitty (FG), is to explore ‘feasibility of establishing access to Cuilcagh via Bellavalley Gap’ while also recognising the ecological and natural sensitivities associated with the site.

Hike: Ardgillan is a gem. A stately country house with crenellations, the fairytale vision rises out of an impressive 194-acre demesne which once had its own private railway platform for the influential Taylor family, who lived here until 1962. Overlooking the Irish Sea, with views to the Mourne Mountains, this sweeping coastal estate offers open parkland, woods and acres of walks, trails and cycle paths. Gardening enthusiasts will enjoy the magnificent floral displays, from the wildflower meadow to Victorian walled garden. Funding welcomed for Cavan Way walk

Cllr John Paul Feely has welcomed the €139,596 that has been allocated under the Outdoor Recreation Scheme to upgrade the Cavan Way, the 16 mile marked walk from Blacklion to Dowra taking in the Shannon Pot and Cavan Burren Park.
“This funding is primarily to take a section from the Shannon Pot towards the trunk road off the Glangevlin to Blacklion Road and follow more closely the route of the river.
“Local staff of Cavan County Council have worked closely with local landowners and as always received great cooperation.
“The Cavan Way forms part of the Beara Breifne Way. It is a target of the National Trails Office to get as much of our walking routes off of Regional Road. This funding will bring the largest section of the Cavan Way off a regional road as well as keeping it along the route of the Shannon.
