Son of slain Lincoln officer training to join the police

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) The son of a Lincoln police officer who was killed in the line of duty last year is training to become a police officer.
Carlos Herrera is on track to graduate from the police academy this spring and become a Lincoln police officer in June, according to the Lincoln Journal Star. His father, Mario Herrera, died last September about two weeks after he was shot while serving a warrant in Lincoln. Mario Herrera was the first Lincoln police officer killed on the job in more than 50 years.

A dog in Columbus, Nebraska, who escaped a bad situation and helped save five other canines in the process, has found a special place to call home.
“Hero, a one-and-a-half-year-old retriever mix, will soon be joining the home of another hero – that of Carrie Herrera, wife of Lincoln Police Department Investigator Mario Herrera, who died in the line of duty last year,” the
Columbus Telegramreported Friday.
According to Paws and Claws Adoption Center director Deb Potter, Hero was rescued from a hoarding situation in November once he broke through boarded windows and got the attention of neighbor Tonie Quinlin.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Carrie Herrera, widow of Lincoln Police Investigator Mario Herrera, who was shot in the line of duty in August and died in September, is opening up for the first time since his passing.
For most of Lincoln and the state of Nebraska, Investigator Herrera’s passing was just a few days of grief and remembrance, thoughts and prayers.
But for his family, the last five months have been filled with mountains and molehills and continues to be interrupted by a series of roadblocks.
