A spay and neuter clinic will be held May 7 and 8 at the Arapaho School gym. Dog bites from feral dogs have been increasing over the last few years. A way to get ahead of the problem is fewer litters of puppies.
Carrie Boynton with the Animal Adoption Center in Jackson helped put together the clinic. In past years, the center also provided dog food and meals for their owners but this year is different. We are not going to have other people in the building. Normally we bring dog food and people food, said Boynton. Just as a safety precaution to keep people safe.
As humans were seeking relief from a more home-bound world of COVID-19, Jackson Hole s Animal Adoption Center was breaking its all-time record for dog and cat adoptions in 2020.
The Animal Adoption Center found homes for 462 pets last year, nearly double the typical annual adoption rate of 220 to 250 animals in an average year, according to Executive Director Carrie Boynton.
The adoption numbers also soared past the nonprofit s prior record set in 2006 when there were 404 adoptions. At least 2,014 animals were spayed or neutered.Â
âItâs amazing,â Boynton said. âWeâre so lucky to have such an incredibly supportive community. Itâs a special place that we live in, so many people willing to open their hearts and their homes to animals and give them a chance as a foster or as a new family member. Itâs pretty special stuff.â
Jackie Skaggs smiles as her dog, Ricky, gives her a nose kiss outside their home Friday. Jackie and her husband, Bob, were two of hundreds of people to adopt from the Animal Adoption Center this year during the COVID-19 pandemic. âI was worried about opening my heart to another dog after our last dog, Pepper, died,â Jackie said. âBut it took no time at all for him to make a place in our hearts.â KAYLA RENIE / NEWS&GUIDE
Richard was roaming the streets of Riverton in late July. His hair was unruly â even more unruly than usual for a schnauzer â and he had developed severe periodontal disease. No one knows how long he had been on his own.
