The legend of Tom Dula (pronounced and often spelled Dooley ) is a myth. The convicted murderer of Laura Foster in 1866 becomes, for romantics, the tragic lover who went down singing on the way to the scaffold.
Despite strong circumstantial evidence and Dula s confession, diehard sympathizers believe that Dula had been innocent. He d professed his innocence in a one-hour speech before hanging.
A new, original musical about Dula s life, scheduled to open at Parkway Playhouse in Burnsville in August (2010), goes even further, pinning the killing on someone else. Legends are the point of the play, titled, The Ballad of Tom Dooley. It begins with 1930s musicians picking up the story lines through ballads.
THERE will be Labour representation in Northumberland County Council matters relating to Tynedale for the first time in four years. The party reclaimed its seat in Prudhoe North after an absence of one term, while also claiming the Bywell ward from the Tories. Ken Stow successfully removed Labour from Prudhoe North four years ago, but his successor Tracy Gilmore, the current town mayor, was unable to keep the seat blue. She went head to head with Labour s Angie Scott, who received just 67 more votes than Mrs Gilmore to return the seat to Labour. Coun. Scott received 862 votes to Mrs Gilmore s 795.

A WELL-USED facility in Prudhoe has been given a new lease of life thanks to a funding boost from the local town council. The kitchen in Prudhoe Parish Hall is used by countless local groups, including many that cater to children - but for some years, the church has hoped to refit the kitchen. Many groups have expressed a desire to use the kitchen facilities for baking and other activities, but the previous kitchen was not up to scratch. Prudhoe Town Council provided funding for the scheme, as well as councillors Ken Stow and Gordon Stewart via their member s local improvement scheme.
