CHURCH WELLS, Kane County An Arizona man has been arrested in connection with the death of a man in southern Utah in a case that authorities are now calling a homicide.
Jason Thomas Bates, 38, of Page, Arizona, was charged Tuesday in 6th District Court with murder and two counts of discharging a firearm causing serious injury, both first-degree felonies; aggravated assault, a second-degree felony; and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a third-degree felony.
Bates is accused of shooting and killing Matthew Wayne Young, 49, on Young s property in Church Wells on April 13. Bates is accused of shooting Young in the back, causing serious injury. A few seconds later, while (Young) was face down on the ground, (Bates) shot (him) at close range in the back of the head, charging documents state.

Cedar City man dies after 20-foot fall in slot canyon

KANE COUNTY, Utah â A man died over the weekend after falling in a slot canyon area in southern Utah.
According to Kane County Sheriff Tracy Glover, 55-year-old Jeffrey Bowden of Cedar City fell about 20 feet Sunday afternoon in an area called Fat Man s Misery, just east of Zion National Park.
A friend who was hiking with Bowden saw him fall and even tried to soften his landing. She sustained minor injuries in doing so.
Officials say after the friend attended to Bowden and presumed he was dead, she hiked out to call for help.
