Campfire safety is essential to preventing wildfires

Observe Red Flag warnings on windy days Headlight staff reports SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Gila National Forest wants to remind our visitors about the importance of campfire safety and your part in preventing human-caused wildland fires. The dry winter and spring combined with strong winds has already brought wildfire season to the Gila National Forest. To date, the forest has seen several small wildfires, as well as the 220-acres Elk Fire. The causes of these fires are under investigation. This past weekend, the Catwalk Recreation Area saw two small wildfires, which combined, equaled .75 acres and there was a .75-acre wildfire on the Quemado Road.

Elk Fire near Reserve grows to 229 acres SILVER CITY - The Elk Fire near Reserve has grown to an estimated 229 acres in the Gila National Forest. The cause of the fire is under investigation.  The wildfire started the morning of March 31 under unknown circumstances. It was previously reported that lightning was the cause, but that has been amended by the U.S. Forest Service.  The fire is burning about 30 miles east of Reserve in Catron County. Resources have been working on hot spotting and securing lines. They report that fire activity has been minimal there has been some interior smoke from stumps and heavy fuels burning.

Fire closes Catwalk Written by Nickolas Seibel on March 16, 2021 In the wake of a small fire in Whitewater Canyon over the weekend, the Glenwood Ranger District of the Gila National Forest announced Monday that the Catwalk Recreation Area has been temporarily closed due to hazard trees post-fire. “There are concerns about people venturing into the burned area,” Gila National Forest spokeswoman Marta Call told the Daily Press on Monday, adding that the closure would last “probably for two weeks.” Forest Order 03-06-04-21-009 was officially signed March 14 to close the Catwalk Recreation Area, since there are hazard trees that will have to be brought down. The Gila National Forest, Glenwood Ranger District is reporting that the Catwalk Recreation Area is temporarily closed due to hazards from trees that were affected by the Catwalk Fire over the weekend. The purpose of this Order is to protect the public’s health and safety due to wildland fire activities in the restricted area. This temporary health and safety order will remain in effect until March 31st, 2022, or until rescinded, whichever occurs first.
