Photo courtesy Holt Research Forest via Kennebec Estuary Land Trust The Kennebec Estuary Land Trust will host a discussion Thursday, Feb. 18, at 6 p.m. via Zoom on the roles of rodents and how their populations tell stories about forest health. Jack Witham of the University of Maine’s Center for Research on Sustainable Forests will showcase the 35-plus years of small mammal research he’s guided at Holt Research Forest in Arrowsic.

$2 4M awarded for natural resource conservation of Maine wetlands

By Staff Eleven projects to restore, enhance or protect wetlands and other important natural resources around the state were selected to receive the latest round of funds from the Maine Natural Resource Conservation Program. The projects include a dam removal project in Vassalboro, a tidal culvert upgrade in Cape Elizabeth, and conservation of high-value wetlands at sites ranging in size from 24 acres to nearly 500 acres.  In all, $2,455,038 was awarded to restore or enhance almost 10 acres of wetlands and help conserve over 1,300 acres of wetlands and upland buffer. The Maine Natural Resource Conservation Program  has become one of Maine’s most important tools for conservationists and developers to work together to protect fragile wetland habitats,” Melanie Loyzim, acting commissioner of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, said in a news release. “It’s a win for Maine’s natural environment, and it’s a win for Maine’s economy.”

(Photo by Jess Donohoe/Hearty Roots) Hills to Sea Trail Coalition, of Unity, is one of 18 Maine nonprofit organizations sharing in $206,000 worth of grants through the Conservation for All program within Maine Community Foundation. Hills will use its $10,000 share for general operations to maintain programs, volunteers, part-time staff person and improvements to the Hills to Sea Trail. Launched last year, the Conservation for All grant program provides general support grants to organizations and projects that build strong connections between people in Maine and our land and water.

Photo courtesy of Dr. Gayle Zydlewski A virtual lecture about some of Maine’s most interesting fish will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, on Zoom. Although you may have seen or heard sturgeon leap and splash in Maine’s Kennebec and Sheepscot rivers, these large bony fish are rare along much of the North American coast and are included on the endangered species list, according to a news release from the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust.

Land trust to present lecture series The Times Record Share A virtual lecture organized by the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21 will focus on sturgeon. The lecture will feature Gayle Zydlewski, a professor at the University of Maine who has carried out research on sturgeon in Maine’s rivers for more than 10 years. Zydlewski will discuss where sturgeon can be found along Maine’s coast, how they live and what recent research in Maine has found out about them. On Thursday, Feb. 18, Kennebec Estuary Land Trust co-founder and board member Jack Witham will discuss his work at the Holt Research Forest. On Thursday, Feb.25, Tim Blair will lead a discussion on mindful meditation in the outdoors.
