Indiana enacted one of the country’s first red-flag laws, but it hasn’t always been used when needed. As researchers who study gun violence, we’re puzzled that the law was not invoked in the case of Brandon Hole, the 19-year-old Indianapolis man who shot and killed eight employees and then himself at a FedEx facility last week, even though last year Hole was briefly detained involuntarily for a psychiatric evaluation, his shotgun seized. He never reclaimed the shotgun but went on to buy two semiautomatic rifles, legally, at least one of which was used in the attack.
