INDIANAPOLIS â Ajeet Singh had to steel himself for a return to work at a FedEx warehouse in Indianapolis April 20 for the first time since a former employee shot dead eight people, including four members of Indianapolisâ tightly knit Sikh community.
âIâve been scared to go back,â Singh said. âI donât know why this happened still. Was it random, or was it because of who I am?â
While the motive for the April 15 rampage remains under investigation, leaders and members of the Sikh community say they feel a collective trauma and believe more must be done to combat the bigotry, bias and violence they have suffered for decades in the country. Amid intense pain, theyâre channeling their grief into demands for gun reform and tougher hate crime statutes, and calls for outsiders to educate themselves about their Sikh neighbors.

Faith Leaders Call on Lawmakers and Governor Holcomb to End “Gun Violence”
INDIANAPOLIS–A candlelight vigil was held Sunday night to honor the victims who have died from what faith leaders call “gun violence.” The vigil ended with them telling Governor Holcomb and other lawmakers to take action on what many of them call a “public health crisis.”
“We are calling on Governor Holcomb as well as Senator (Todd) Young and Senator (Mike) Braun to advocate on both the state and federal levels for universal background checks to be required for all gun purchases as well as bans on assault-style weapons,” said Gunning Francis, vice president of academic affairs at Christian Theological Seminary. “We call upon our governor to make sure that mental healthcare is available to all people.”
Opinions | Red-flag laws are great, but another available legal tool may be as effective Jeffrey Swanson, Paul Paul Appelbaum © Jeff Dean/AFP/Getty Images Family members of Karli Smith, who died in the attack at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis April 15, attend a vigil Sunday in the city to remember the eight people killed by a former FedEx employee. Indiana enacted one of the country’s first red-flag laws, but it hasn’t always been used when needed. As researchers who study gun violence, we’re puzzled that the law was not invoked in the case of Brandon Hole, the 19-year-old Indianapolis man who shot and killed eight employees and then himself at a FedEx facility last week, even though last year Hole was briefly detained involuntarily for a psychiatric evaluation, his shotgun seized. He never reclaimed the shotgun but went on to buy two semiautomatic rifles, legally, at least one of which was used in the attack.
