The Long Island Regional Economic Development Council plans to pivot its goals to help downtowns recover from the pandemic, while trying to get 66,000 Long Islanders who are unemployed back into the workforce.
Roger Clayman, the executive director of the Long Island Federation of Labor, said there’s an opportunity to invest in solar and wind energy companies to become a big job creator.
“There are really hundreds and maybe even thousands of jobs that will follow over the next 10 years from the development of wind farms,” Clayman said. “So it s important that we have a trained workforce. It s important that we have good, family sustaining jobs.”

The Long Island Association, the region’s largest business group, named Matthew Cohen as its new president and CEO.
The organization had conducted an extensive search, which generated “many strong applicants,” the LIA said in a press release.
Many on Long Island already know Cohen, a 10-year veteran with the LIA, who for 10 years served as its vice president of government affairs and communications, with extensive experience in government and utilities.

More than $1.8 billion in federal funds is coming to New York to help childcare providers and parents meet workforce needs amid the pandemic.
At the Amityville-based Marks of Excellence Child Care on Wednesday, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said that the funds from the American Rescue Plan are coming to Long Island and would provide critical relief for families as the economy and workplaces reopen.
“Since the start of this pandemic, day care and child care center advocates on Long Island have been sounding the alarm that these places are critical to our reopening and need help to survive,” Schumer said in a statement.
