Petition calls on La Crosse to stop demolition of historic Fire Station No. 4

The group said the station has historic value and should be preserved, explaining in their petition, “the building is a cultural and economic asset that belongs to the taxpayers.”
Station No. 4 was built in 1940.
The petition stated that it could be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
In a statement released to News 8 Now Monday, the City of La Crosse Fire Department said the Mayor’s Fire Station Task Force submitted a recommendation to the council in 2018 to demolish and replace Stations No. 2 and No. 4 with new, modern facilities.

Current zoning allows U-Haul to use the interior of the former Kmart building for retail sales, but rezoning would be necessary for fleet rentals and self-storage.
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) Chagrin over the proposed use of the former Kmart building on the South Side as a U-Haul facility surfaced at the La Crosse City Council meeting Thursday night, with Mayor Tim Kabat describing the plan as “a shame.”
Council member Doug Happel raised the issue, saying constituents have peppered him with questions about the proposal since the U-Haul Company of Southwestern Wisconsin and Rockford announced its plans for the building last week.

TOWN OF CAMPBELL, Wis. (WKBT)- Dozens of families on French Island are drinking, cooking, and brushing their teeth with bottled water, after learning their wells are contaminated.
The City of La Crosse says the hazardous compound called PFAS as used the airport for years. It spread through the groundwater and into the wells of surrounding homes. Those families and their attorneys are asking the city to do the right thing and protect their health and property.
