The City of La Crosse s Fire Department and Water Utility have introduced the "Hydro Helpers" program to engage children in community service. Children will be responsible for the upkeep of fire hydrants during winter, including shoveling snow and inspecting for damage. Participants aged 17 or younger and residing in La Crosse are invited to a special event with the fire department after successfully caring for their designated hydrant. Sign up and safety guidelines can be found on the La Crosse Fire Department s website.
