Ask musicians Will Oldham and Matt Sweeney if, given the relative uncertainty of post-pandemic life, they had any hesitations in the spring about booking a June tour along the California coast to play music from their new collaborative album, “Superwolves,” and they reply in unison.
“The opposite,” says guitarist Sweeney during a Zoom call from his home near Tompkins Square Park in New York. He first drew acclaim through his New York indie-rock band Chavez and Billy Corgan’s project Zwan, but he is better known for his session work with, among others, Adele, the Chicks and Run the Jewels.

A few years after heâd decided to start calling himself Bonnie âPrinceâ Billy, Will Oldham released a song called âA Wolf Among Wolves.â Itâs about a person who doesnât feel properly seen, and itâs exceptionally sad, even for the guy who wrote âI See a Darkness.â âWhy canât I be loved as what I am?â he sighs. âA wolf among wolves, and not as a man.â Wildness, ferocity, heart, all the things wolves tend to signifyâthe way he sings, itâs as if theyâve all been drained away by loneliness. Get a taste of their first record since 2005 with Hall of Death
Superwolf still standing tall as a fan favourite, the pair are finally reuniting to give us a sequel. The album is logically being titled
Superwolves, and it will arrive digitally on April 30 via Drag City (and physically on June 18).
To get us going, the duo have shared the album s first single Hall of Death, which has been fit with a music video. The track was made alongside Tuareg guitarist and producer Ahmoudou Madassane, as well as Mdou Moctar.
