Flight review – a perilous, powerful trip down the road to freedom

Last modified on Thu 20 May 2021 10.56 EDT Getting into the auditorium for Flight involves a laborious, airport-style transit from one holding area to another before arrival at our self-contained “booths”. An immersive experience based on the plight of refugee children that was first staged in 2017, this installation might have been conceived for our socially distanced times. As pandemic friendly as it is, the offer of a solitary experience inside a theatre may seem counterintuitive after waiting for the communality of the auditorium to return. It is a relief, then, that this show – created by Vox Motus and co-presented by the Bridge theatre and the Barbican – is worth buckling in for. It consists of a revolving diorama containing miniature models in lit-up boxes and an accompanying soundtrack on headphones.

One of the affected shows, The Storm, has now been filmed and, alongside a comprehensive education package, is being offered free of charge to all secondary school pupils across Rochdale, in partnership with Rochdale Borough Council Education Service. This film and teaching resource raises awareness of the climate emergency and is available for all 12,000 KS3 and 4 high school pupils across the district.

Review: Flight (Bridge Theatre)

© Beth Chalmers Two brothers, Aryan and Kabir, set off from Afghanistan on a perilous mission to reach London. It s an all-too familiar story, but told with startling beauty in this innovative – and completely Covid safe – production from Vox Motus. We sit in individual booths watching a procession of model boxes, wearing headphones that utilise binaural sound (the same showcased in Complicité s The Encounter). It s a deft technique that puts us right in the heart of the action, from the brothers stormy Mediterranean crossing to their exploitative labour on a fruit farm and final fateful crossing of the Channel in a refrigerated meat lorry.
