Nestled behind a subdivision on the eastern edge of Springfield, Missouri lays an oasis for young girls and experienced equestrians alike. Housed in a hilltop stable, The Libby Ferguson Training Center bustles with the activity of both riders and horses.
For owner Libby Ferguson, horses have been a lifelong passion.
âIâve always loved horses, for as long as I can remember. I got my first horse when I was 8, and I started showing horses when I was about 11,â Ferguson said.
Her career as an instructor started as a side project during her college years.
âI ended up getting back into it by a lady I used to show horses for,â Ferguson said. âShe had someone leave her barn and asked if I wanted to come give lessons. I was going to college at the time and thought âWhy not?â I had a couple horses at the time so I could do it. It was something fun to get back into it. So here I am.â
Falmouth Marine and Environmental Services reported that a horse got loose on Friday, April 2, and that its personnel returned it to Smithfield Farm, but farm owner Janice Foster said the horse is not hers.
The incident occurred less than a week after the board of health rescinded the farmâs stable license based on several health and safety concerns including an unsecure horse chorale.
According to Falmouth police, dispatch received a report of a horse loose in the backyard of a home at 850 Carriage Shop Road near Blueberry Lane. The home is adjacent to the farm property on Sandwich Road. Police notified MES, which captured the horse and returned it to Smithfield Farm.

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. (The Charlotte Observer) - A horse has tested positive for rabies in Gaston County, something experts say is uncommon in the United States.
Gaston County Police say the animal has died and no humans were reported injured.
However, people in surrounding neighborhoods have been warned to be wary of pets exhibiting signs of rabies, including aggressiveness, police said in a news release.
Investigators say the infection was discovered last week by a veterinarian who was treating “a sick horse” in the 300 block of Robert Road in Cherryville. That’s about 30 miles northwest of Charlotte.
One person remains behind and appears to return to the border wall.
The drone appears to follow the truck and trailer as they speed away.
Modlin tweeted that agents eventually stopped the vehicle. They arrested three U.S. citizens on charges relating to human smuggling. Inside the trailer, agents found 20 illegal immigrants, Modlin stated.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a loaded firearm and five grams of methamphetamine, the chief said.
