The City of Bellingham cleaned up a homeless encampment located at Frank Geri Field near the Civic Athletic Complex Tuesday morning. But even as people were swept out of the camp, they were setting up another less than two miles away.
After crews broke down the camp, dozens of people experiencing homelessness pitched tents at Laurel Park a neighborhood playfield bordering Western Washington University.
The camp had been at Civic Athletic Complex since it moved from Bellingham City Hall in February.
It has been a scene of ongoing trouble. Earlier this month a large fire broke out at the camp.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. The clearing of a homeless encampment at Bellingham’s Civic Athletic Complex went smoothly Tuesday but the problem remains for the community.
Many of the campers simply moved to Laurel Park near the Western Washington University campus, to the chagrin of local residents.
Public Works Director Eric Johnston says they’ve already taken steps to make sure this doesn’t turn into another long-term stand-off.
He says residents can report encampments or any other problems online.
The City has posted a notice at the Laurel Park site to vacate by 8am Friday.
