SKNVibes | Professor Clive Landis to serve as next Principal at The UWI Cave Hill Campus

The UWI, Press Release The UWI Regional Headquarters, Jamaica. W.I. Wednesday, May 12, 2021 The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce Professor Clive Landis as the next Principal of its Cave Hill Campus in Barbados. Professor Landis’ appointment was confirmed at The UWI’s annual business meeting of its University Council on April 30. The appointment was approved by the University Council, following a recommendation from Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles.   Professor Landis, who joined The UWI in 2004, has served as Deputy Principal of the Campus from 2015-2019; as University Pro Vice-Chancellor for Undergraduate Studies from 2019-2021 and Chair of the UWI Zika Task Force in 2016. He is also currently Chair of the UWI COVID-19 Task Force, having assumed the role since February 2020. He will succeed retiring Principal, Professor the Most Honourable V. Eudine Barriteau with effect from August 1, 2021, for a period of five years. 

Debate now swirls over long-time beach feature, amid calls to bar access

May 13, 2021 The Barbados Government has stepped in to address cries from some sections of the public to close access to that area of Brighton Beach, off Spring Garden, St Michael popularly known as The Hot Pot. The state’s intervention followed pleas from several Barbadians including the father of the latest person to die from drowning while bathing in the vicinity of the popular bathing spot. A “danger” sign has existed for sometime now, warning members of the public “Do not swim here – strong current.” The body of 21-year-old Jovonni Moise of Dash Valley, St George washed ashore on Monday after he disappeared while bathing there with friends the day before.

May 10, 2021 One of the things Dr Rudolph Alleyne, Head of the Sports Academy at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, would like to see, is that institution becoming an official high-performance centre in the Caribbean. Alleyne who has been part of the academy since 2013 also believes that a national training centre could be realised as well if the academy partners with the government, sporting federations and the Barbados Olympic Association. “One of my goals, when I was at Temple University finishing off my first degree, was to find a way where we can assist our athletes here in Barbados. When I say assist, allowing them to sharpen their skills, and their ability to perform particularly at the highest level.

by Bajan Reporter / May 8th, 2021 Sir Frank Worrell has fulfilled the necessary requirements for hero status, and throughout his life represented Barbados “ when this fair land was young and sowed the seed from which our pride is sprung. A pride that makes no wanton boast of what it has withstood, that binds our hearts from coast to coast, the pride of nationhood.” He also made it known that “these fields and hills beyond recall are now our very own” when he became the first black captain of the West Indies cricket team for an entire series as was being requested by the majority of West Indians and therefore wrote “his name on history’s page with expectations great” along with the knowledge that he had to be a “strict guardian of our heritage and a firm craft man of our fate”. Historically, he had an illustrious career while being an ideal representative of Barbados which boasts of 96% literacy along with our prowess in our national sport of cricket. He represent
