May 6, 2021 Two recent events again suggest that words emanating from the mouths of some of our leaders carry as much substance as a fleeting breeze. Unfortunately, those with welcoming pockets, outstretched hands and compliant craniums, too often refuse to question circumstances that stretch reasonableness and allow their various biases to inter common sense. The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is one of the greatest contributors to our Caribbean civilization. It is as important a regional institution as there will ever be. Thus, we owe it to ourselves to maximise its profitability, prestige and performance, and in so doing, enrich our own lives immeasurably.

Saturday, May 1, 2021 The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to advise of appointments and reappointments for members of its senior Executive Management approved at its annual business meeting of University Council.    Regarded as the regional university’s highest governing body, the University Council, chaired by Chancellor Robert Bermudez, met virtually on Friday, April 30, 2021. The Council is authorised by The UWI’s Charter and Statutes to review the work of the University together with the audited statement of accounts and makes required appointments of new and returning Executives, Deans and Senior Managers.

Rudder blasts copyright abusers

Social Share Noted author and musician Antonio ‘Boo’ Rudder is charging that government institutions are the ‘biggest abusers of intellectual properties in Barbados’ and he is calling on them to do better. Speaking during the recent Beyond the Book webinar put on by the National Cultural Foundation via Zoom in recognition of World Book Day, Rudder said it was high time something was done about the lack of respect for intellectual properties. “The Government is the biggest abuser of intellectual properties in Barbados – the schools and the Government departments. As a matter of fact, only within recent times have we been successful in signing a licence with The University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus,” he explained.

Landis appointed principal at Cave Hill, Sir Hilary reappointed

Social Share KINGSTON, Jamaica – Professor Clive Landis is the new principal of The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Cave Hill Campus, the first non-Caribbean person to hold that post. This was among the official announcements coming from The UWI on Friday, including the reappointment of Professor Sir Hilary Beckles as the Vice-Chancellor for another six-year period. Landis, who was serving as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Undergraduate Studies, migrated from Imperial College London in 2004. He succeeds Professor the Most Honourable Violet Eudine Barriteau, who is retiring. Barriteau, who is Grenadian by birth, is among the list of Caribbean heads at Cave Hill, including Leslie Robinson, Sir Sidney Martin, Sir Keith Hunte and Sir Hilary.
