Great Bend man killed when oncoming semi suffers tire blowout

By The News staff GREAT BEND – A Great Bend man died, and another man was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when a tire blew on an oncoming semi, causing the truck to cross into their lane on a highway in Barton County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the 2002 Western Star semi driven by Francisco E. Martinez-Solano, 47, of Bazine, was southbound on U.S. 281 when a front steering tire on the truck blew about a mile north of the Stafford County line. That caused the truck to cross the centerline into the path of a northbound 2012 GMC Sierra 3500 driven by Gerald A. “Tony” Hinson, 59, of Great Bend, which was also pulling a trailer.

A man was taken by helicopter to KU Medical Center after a single-car accident early Sunday morning. The Lawrence Police Department did not respond to the Journal-World phone calls or an email for information about the accident. However, Mike Frizzell, who monitors late-night scanner traffic for the Journal-World, reported a single-vehicle accident happened about 4:20 a.m. Sunday. The driver of a vehicle that hit a pole was taken by helicopter to KU Medical Center, he reported. Nicole Riegle, of Lawrence, told the Journal-World she reported the accident to 911 after being awoken by a crash near the intersection of Kasold Drive and Harvard Road. Riegle said she went to to the accident scene and stayed with an injured adult male driver, the only person in the vehicle, until emergency vehicles arrived about 4:30 a.m. The passenger car appeared to have been westbound on Harvard Road when the driver lost control and hit a utility pole on the north side of the street a few feet east of
