A man was taken by helicopter to KU Medical Center after a single-car accident early Sunday morning.
The Lawrence Police Department did not respond to the Journal-World phone calls or an email for information about the accident. However, Mike Frizzell, who monitors late-night scanner traffic for the Journal-World, reported a single-vehicle accident happened about 4:20 a.m. Sunday. The driver of a vehicle that hit a pole was taken by helicopter to KU Medical Center, he reported.
Nicole Riegle, of Lawrence, told the Journal-World she reported the accident to 911 after being awoken by a crash near the intersection of Kasold Drive and Harvard Road. Riegle said she went to to the accident scene and stayed with an injured adult male driver, the only person in the vehicle, until emergency vehicles arrived about 4:30 a.m. The passenger car appeared to have been westbound on Harvard Road when the driver lost control and hit a utility pole on the north side of the street a few feet east of Kasold Drive, Riegle said. Emergency personal used extraction tools to remove the driver. He was then taken by helicopter to KU Medical Center, she said.
