ORFace and Pat Postma

ORFace and Pat Postma D. Ray Smith/Historically Speaking This “Historically Speaking” article will be focused on the future as well as reminding us of a past I feel not too many realize. Writing “Historically Speaking” has become a part of my life that is most rewarding. I am constantly being encouraged by readers who offer suggestions for topics and many who are willing to contribute to the articles. Benita Albert and Carolyn Krause are two who routinely contribute. Others, such as Mike Stallo also contribute.  This one is a bit unusual, but I hope you will enjoy learning some history and will join me as we look to the future. Stay with me now …

Kingston Workers Project launched by ET Foundation, UT hospital

Kingston Workers Project launched by ET Foundation, UT hospital Special to The Oak Ridger The East Tennessee Foundation and University of Tennessee Medical Center are joining forces to provide complimentary evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment planning for workers who participated in the cleanup of the historic spill of coal ash at TVA’s coal-fired steam plant in Kingston, Tenn., that occurred on Dec. 22, 2008. “Through no fault of their own, these workers and their families have suffered greatly over the past 12 years, and we are extremely pleased that the University of Tennessee Medical Center has stepped forward to work with East Tennessee Foundation in helping determine the medical situation of the workers,” East Tennessee Foundation President & CEO Mike McClamroch said in a news release.

Coal ash disaster marks 12th anniversary

Other workers have died, felled by cancers developed after toiling in the ash fields, plaintiffs allege. The spill happened on a bitter Monday night, Dec. 22, 2008. A holding cell loaded with liquid coal ash at the steam plant failed, spilling the liquid into rivers and destroying Swan Pond neighborhood homes and properties. Jacobs says it took adequate steps on behalf of the hundreds of people it hired to rid the countryside around the Kingston steam plant of acres of ash. TVA operates the plant but isn t a defendant in the ongoing litigation. It cost TVA more than $1 billion to clean the area up and left a legacy of ash remnants resting along the bottom of the Emory River. The utility giant also gave millions to the community to help make amends, and it bought about 180 properties affected by the spill.
