The town of Jacksonâs Complete Streets Program took another step toward completion Monday when the Town Council approved a street-and-sidewalk plan for the stretch of Rancher Street in East Jackson from Broadway to Hansen Avenue.
The council approved Alternative 2 of three proposed alternatives for the Rancher project, and also chose Option 2 of four presented for the intersection of Pearl and Rancher.
Assistant Public Works Director Johnny Ziem has presented and discussed the alternatives with the council over several meetings, including Monday afternoonâs workshop, fielding questions from councilors each step of the way about various aspects of the project. Ziem and town Community Engagement Specialist Susan Scarlata spent a good deal of time in recent months gathering, compiling and assessing public opinion about desires for the project, particularly from residents of the Rancher Street corridor.

The development company responsible for two school projects currently underway will be a partner in the affordable housing construction and neighborhood revitalization in the areas around those schools, thanks to a grant and multi-agency collaboration.
In early 2021, Healthy Community, LLC submitted a $1 million grant proposal to build affordable homes around the renovated 6-12 Jackson Central-Merry High and the new Madison Academic High, both of which Healthy Community is overseeing as construction crews work overtime to finish for their August openings.
The Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA) has approved the grant through the Southwest Community Development Corporation even though THDA is still in the final stages of the grant process.
