LOUISVILLE, Ky. Louisville arson investigators believe the large fire at a historical vacant church Saturday night started close to the roof or in an attic area. Major Bobby Cooper with the Louisville Fire Department said Monday that “any and all things are considered.”
Firefighters were called to the 200 block of East Jacob Street around 8:45 Saturday and found heavy flames coming from the roof. About six minutes into the operation, part of the roof collapses and crews were evacuated.
Louisville Fire Department arson investigators are working to determine the cause of a vacant church building fire in Old Louisville Saturday evening.
Firefighters were dispatched to the fire in the 200 block of East Jacob Street at 8:25 p.m. and found flames coming from the roof of the building, according to a statement from the department.
Fire crews entered the building but were forced to evacuate after a partial roof collapse. Additional crews were dispatched, eventually requiring a two-alarm response with more than 70 firefighters battling the flames, according to the statement.
Firefighters worked for nearly two hours to fight the blaze, bringing it under control at 10:13 p.m., the statement said. Crews plan to remain at the scene for several more hours.
