El Cajon spent $1 5 million to provide services to homeless, clean up city

EL CAJON    El Cajon has the second-highest number of homeless people in San Diego County, so it’s not surprising that it is among the top concerns of residents and businesses. Last week, El Cajon City Manager Graham Mitchell provided an update to the City Council about the steps the city has taken to help those living on the streets 784, according to the Point-in-Time Count coordinated by the Regional Task Force on the Homeless in January 2020 as well as keep the city safe and clean. The city of San Diego had the most, with 4,887 homeless people. El Cajon funded or operated nine homeless-related programs in calendar year 2020, Mitchell said, providing $1.5 million. A report shared by staff said those funds include $1.2 million for homeless assistance/housing programs and nearly $278,000 on neighborhood cleanup efforts related to homeless issues.

New housing for homeless individuals, families coming to El Cajon

EL CAJON    Construction is set to begin Friday on two buildings that will provide homeless individuals with temporary housing while they get back on their feet. Builders will lay the groundwork on Friday morning for two dormitories that will house 100 individuals at the East County Transitional Living Center in El Cajon. The center, established in 2004 in a converted hotel at 1527 E. Main St., gives individuals and families experiencing homelessness a roof over their heads and food for 28 days, as well as life skills training, housing navigation, job placement and follow-up care. After digging trenches to make way for underground utilities on Friday, workers will return on Saturday morning to lay down pipes and add other ironwork along with a concrete pour. The buildings are expected to go up sometime in May in another 24-hour build. The project is four years in the making, including years of fundraising, permitting needs and planning.
