Fort Bliss soldier dies after motorcycle crash in East El Paso

A young Fort Bliss soldier has died after being hospitalized for five days following a motorcycle crash in East El Paso. Spc. Ethan Harvey Mandel, 20, was mortally injured in an April 5 motorcycle crash on George Dieter Drive near Trawood Drive, according to El Paso police and an online fundraising page set up by family. About 1:15 a.m. on April 5, Mandel was riding a 2008 Honda CBR motorcycle southbound on George Dieter Drive at a high speed, police said.

Sex offender wanted after cutting ankle monitor, fleeing halfway house

A convicted sex offender is wanted after cutting his ankle monitor and fleeing a halfway house in far East El Paso County. Santos Salas, 51, removed his ankle monitor and absconded Monday from the El Paso Transitional Living Center at 1650 Horizon Blvd. near Horizon City, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office officials said. Salas is now wanted on a parole violation with an additional charge of failure of a sex offender’s duty to register pending, officials said. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Sex Offender Registry, Salas primarily goes by Santo Salas Padilla. Salas was convicted of sexual assault of a child in 1991. The victim was a 13-year-old girl.

Northeast El Paso man dies after traffic collision on Railroad Drive

A 78-year-old driver died at a hospital following a two-vehicle collision Monday afternoon in Northeast El Paso, police said Wednesday. Juan Estrada was driving on Railroad Drive when he suddenly veered and struck a pickup in the next lane, a police news release stated. The collision occurred about 1:30 p.m. and closed a portion of Railroad Drive for six hours. Police said that Estrada was driving a 2000 Honda Passport in the right lane while Mario Escobedo, 69, was driving a 2008 Ford F-250 in the left lane. Both vehicles were southbound on Railroad Drive near Nations Tobin Park.  Estrada passed Escobedo and suddenly veered into the left lane  hitting Escobedo s truck, a police news release stated.
