QUINCY On a sunny and windswept Saturday, Chris McCallum s friends and family gathered in a small park off East Squantum Street to organize a tribute to the beloved father of three sons. In between hugs and misty eyes, they handed out black and red ribbons, the colors of his alma mater North Quincy High School, to be hammered to utility poles along the causeway in the tight-knit Quincy community of Squantum. It has been two years since Chris McCallum, of Bridgewater, was killed. His family says he was struck by a fatal punch while trying to break up a fight less than a mile away outside of a concert at the American Legion Robert I. Nickerson post. He was 44.

(AP) A former president of the University of Alabama at Birmingham who also served as mayor of Vestavia Hills died Saturday, the university and his family confirmed. A cause of death for Dr. Charles A. “Scotty” McCallum Jr. was not released. He was 95 years old. McCallum’s son, Chris, posted on Facebook about his father’s death, news outlets reported. “Dad made it to heaven at 205 this am,” Chris McCallum wrote. “If you knew him he made you part of his family!” McCallum was named the third president of UAB in 1987 and served until 1993. He also served the university as vice president for Health Affairs, dean of the School of Dentistry and chair of the Department of Oral Surgery.

Violent attack on girlfriend nets man a 10-year prison sentence

URBANA â A Champaign man with a history of domestic-violence convictions was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in prison for stabbing his former girlfriend repeatedly in the home they shared. Judge Randy Rosenbaum found that Keenan Washingtonâs actions on March 14 were âbrutal and heinous,â which made him eligible for an extended of three to 14 years in prison. âIf you have anger-control issues, talk. Donât stab,â Rosenbaum said. Washington, 29, who last lived in the 2500 block of North Neil Street, pleaded guilty in late October to aggravated domestic battery for stabbing his girlfriend of 2.5 years five times. The stabbing was the culmination of five hours of holding her against her will, the woman told Rosenbaum, that started about noon and lasted until 5 p.m.
