Champaign Police Officer Chris Oberheim, 44, Fatally Shot While Responding To ‘Domestic Disturbance’

CHICAGO (CBS/AP)– A Champaign police officer was fatally shot and another was wounded while responding to a domestic disturbance Wednesday. The gunman also was killed in a shootout with police.
According to the Champaign Police Department, officer Chris Oberheim, 44, was shot while responding to a domestic disturbance in the 2400 block of North Neil Street shortly before 3:30 a.m.
As officers were getting out of their vehicles at the scene, they exchanged gunfire with an armed suspect. Oberheim and another officer were shot, and so was the suspect.
Decatur Native and Former DPD Officer Shot and Killed in Champaign Wednesday Morning
A former Decatur Police Officer, now working for Champaign Police, was shot and killed early Wednesday morning while responding to a call involving a domestic dispute.
44-year-old Chris Oberheim was one of two Champaign Police Officers who were shot early Wednesday morning in the 2400 block of North Neil Street around 3:24 a.m. when they arrived at the Town Center Apartments in response to a domestic disturbance. When the two officers got out of their vehicle, they were approached by an armed suspect and exchanged gunfire. The suspect was fatally wounded and pronounced dead at the scene.
