Yodice: Late Hall of Fame coach Brown — man of faith, competitive, impactful » Albuquerque Journal

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... In this 1996 photo, coach Mike Brown and Chargers player Shawn McConkey try to get a referee’s attention during a game against Socorro in Las Cruces. (Greg Sorber/Albuquerque Journal File) If you wanted to know Mike Brown but never had the chance, one could learn much – maybe everything – about the man merely by listening to his doting grandchildren. They shared stories and anecdotes, relayed this week as part of Brown’s funeral services. Their words were alternately touching and funny and insightful, and entirely relevant to the legacy of the Hall of Fame basketball coach from Albuquerque Academy. Brown, 75, died on June 30.

Black Investment Fund offering business grants

The One Albuquerque Fund a city-supporting foundation is administering the program funded with city money. Nicole Bedford, a coordinator working on the program, said the grants are the first phase and will represent about $300,000 to $400,000 worth of spending. Most of the rest will go toward a second phase that remains in development. The next phase will be more program-based, Bedford said. It could entail training opportunities for business owners or investments related to arts, culture or even mental health. The Fund is presently soliciting feedback to help set the direction. “We want the second phase to be as impactful as we can (make it) in the Black community,” she said.

Yodice on preps: Post-pandemic seasons packed unforgettable moments

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... Natalia Chavez, center, is mobbed by her Volcano Vista teammates after hitting a shot from beyond 45 feet at the OT buzzer to beat Hobbs for the 5A girls basketball title. (Jim Thompson/Albuquerque Journal) Saturday, April 10, as much as any day, defined the staggering weirdness of the spring 2021 prep sports semester in New Mexico. On the same day, the state was staging fall sports in the form of state soccer finals, winter sports in the form of basketball, and the start of spring sports. That kind of confluence had never before occurred. Or, maybe it was April 1 that underlined this point with more clarity, with prep football played inside University Stadium, part of a five-games-in-three days “bowl game” experiment by the New Mexico Activities Association in lieu of an actual football postseason.
