The Teutopolis Unit 50 school district is the only district in Effingham County with enough candidates to fill the available seats in the April 2021 election.
The filing period concluded Monday evening.
Teutopolis Unit 50 had four people file for full four-year terms: Michael Ritchie, Brandon Pals, Erin Ordner and Courtney Tegeler; as well as two people who filed for a two-year unexpired term: Troy Ozenkoski and Toby McMahon.
Meanwhile, no other district had enough people file to fill the seats. Two people filed in Dieterich Unit 30: Devin Aherin and Charity Bohnhoff. Two people filed in Effingham Unit 40: Steve Bone and Chad Thompson. Two people filed in Altamont Unit 10: Dale Laue and Alan Shumaker. And no one filed in Beecher City Unit 20.

The Effingham County Health Department announced the COVID-related death of a county man in his 90s over the weekend. That brings the number of COVID-related deaths in the county to 48.
The Department also received notice of 51 new positive cases of Coronavirus disease from Saturday through Monday. There were 15 cases on Saturday, 23 cases on Sunday, and 13 cases on Monday.

When the Effingham Unit 40 School District made plans for the school year in the midst of the pandemic, they made accommodations for both in-class and remote learning students.
School officials were aware that some remote learning students could end up struggling. That has proved to be the case, and Unit 40 Superintendent Mark Doan told the Board Monday night that steps need to be taken to get the struggling students back into the classroom.
Doan said they can t continue to let the struggling students dig a hole; if it continues, eventually they ll quit.

Time was taken at Monday s Effingham County Board meeting to give recognition to two county sheriff s deputies.
Deputy Jeff Suckow was honored for 25 years service to the sheriff s department. Sheriff Dave Mahon said Suckow has worked for many years as a School Resource Officer and has also been involved in the Shop w/a Deputy program. Mahon also thanked county residents for their contributions to Shop w/a Deputy. Despite the pandemic, just shy of $11,000 has been contributed this year.

No one was injured in a crash on the interstate near Effingham Sunday morning.
Emergency crews were called just after 5:30am to I-70 Westbound, about four miles east of Effingham. Effingham Fire Chief Bob Tutko said a family from Missouri was heading home from a trip to Pennsylvania. There were three adults in the car along with one child.
Tutko said each of the adults were wearing their seat belts, and the child was in a car seat. Despite a great deal of damage to the car, no one was injured.
