The Illinois Department of Public Health Monday reported the COVID-related death of an Effingham County resident. The IDPH said the person was a male in his 90s.
The Department reported 4,699 new confirmed and probable cases on COVID-19 in Illinois, including 98 additional deaths statewide.
As of Sunday night, 4,460 people in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 981 patients were in the ICU and 546 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.

The 2020 Light Up Strasburg Christmas Light Contest was held with a goal in mind to help brighten this difficult year. Residents were asked to decorate their homes for the season.
This year s contest was a People s Choice competition. Votes were cast for 20 homes in Strasburg.

A hearing scheduled for Monday afternoon in the Darren Bailey vs. J.B. Pritzker case was canceled.
Bailey filed suit in Clay County alleging that the governor overextended his authority in issuing repeated executive orders due to COVID-19. Others filed suits in other counties and the Illinois Supreme Court eventually moved all of those cases to Sangamon County.
Oral arguments in the matter were to be presented Monday in Springfield, but Bailey s attorney, Thomas DeVore of Greenville, and Assistant Attorney General Thomas Verticchio, representing Pritzker, contacted trial judge Raylene Grischow. The attorneys requested the oral arguments be waived and asked the Court to issue a written opinion based on the Governor s written submissions.

Prosecution of the Deven Barger murder case in Shelby County is back in the hands of the States Attorney s office.
Barger is charged with the fatal shooting of his pregnant girlfriend, Samantha Cushing at a house in Shelbyville in July 2019. The incident also resulted in the death of the unborn child Cushing was carrying.

Following the shooting, Barger led authorities on a chase that reached the Effingham area and then headed to Taylorville where he surrendered. Barger s three-year-old daughter was with him during the pursuit.
