Research have established that nitrogenous fertilizer has deleterious effect on soil health and crop productivity if used over a long time. There is also possibility of nitrate contamination in groundwater.
ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) recommends use of both inorganic and organic sources of plant nutrients to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers, preventing deterioration of soil health, environment, and contamination of groundwater.
In first half of the current Budget session of Parliament, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that the government has launched a National Mission on Soil Health Card to promote soil test based balanced and judicious fertilizer application.

The five-day National Horticultural Fair of the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, which concluded on Thursday, has boosted the confidence of scientists and policymakers as a record 16.8 lakh people participated in the event online. The robust online viewership during the pandemic has made scientists, agri extension experts, and policy-makers to realise that it is still possible to reach out to farmers effectively through digital platforms with the involvement Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) besides State government agencies.
These agencies had played an active role in mobilising farmers for an online interaction for the fair which had involved 271 KVKs, 900 FPOs, and 22 horticultural institutes in addition to various NGOs and farm-related organisations. New farm laws will increase farmers profits: ICAR Dy Director General
Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Deputy Director-General A. K. Singh on Monday said the new agriculture laws will help farmers to increase their income in a big way. Singh s statement comes amidst several farmers protesting on Delhi s borders since November seeking repeal of three new farm laws.
