Yorston also drove overnight from Christchurch to be the first on the chairlift when The Remarkables opened for the 2021 season last week. “I’m still recovering from my freezing night,” he said late on Wednesday afternoon. “It’s an excuse to go camping. I wouldn’t hang out in the middle of a field if there was nothing to do. “Some people spend $300 to go to Rarotonga. I spend $300 on petrol to sleep on a chairlift.”

Cabinet’s decision to drop the Alert Level late Wednesday afternoon came just in time to save several events planned for this weekend, including Saturday’s inaugural Craft Beer & BBQ Summit at Queenstown’s Coronet Peak.
NZSki comms manager Libby Baron says nine breweries have come on board including Behemoth, NEWNEWNEW, Arrowtown Brewing Co, Altitude and Lake & Wood.
‘‘Most of them are going to be having some special beers on tap for everyone to try that aren’t normally available,’’ she says.
Additionally, Cardrona Distillery will be on hand to make cocktails and Mt Difficulty will have wine on hand, ‘‘so you don’t just have to drink beer’’.
