The mountain had been on hold on Tuesday morning while the team cleared the road and carried out avalanche control work, but reopened on Tuesday afternoon, with a warning to skiers that there was limited visibility at the top of the mountain and considerable avalanche risk. ”Please stay safe, respect the conditions and stick close to the main trails,” an update posted to The Remarkables website read.

Queenstown ski resort The Remarkables also had 25cm of fresh snow overnight. NZ Ski’s third mountain, Mt Hutt in Canterbury, was also open on Tuesday, with no snow overnight but “extremely high and cold winds”, Baron said.

Cabinet’s decision to drop the Alert Level late Wednesday afternoon came just in time to save several events planned for this weekend, including Saturday’s inaugural Craft Beer & BBQ Summit at Queenstown’s Coronet Peak.
NZSki comms manager Libby Baron says nine breweries have come on board including Behemoth, NEWNEWNEW, Arrowtown Brewing Co, Altitude and Lake & Wood.
‘‘Most of them are going to be having some special beers on tap for everyone to try that aren’t normally available,’’ she says.
Additionally, Cardrona Distillery will be on hand to make cocktails and Mt Difficulty will have wine on hand, ‘‘so you don’t just have to drink beer’’.
