Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Michigan was one of 20 recipients of the grant.
They were awarded $1,500.
They say this money will go towards background check for their adult volunteers.
Development coordinator, Kris Hoxie, says this will cover 50% of those fees for one year.
Hoxie says, “Those reduced costs actually allow us to increase our recruitment efforts for volunteers. So that we can actually begin to serve more children.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Michigan says this grant will also allow them to focus their efforts on recruiting volunteers.
The Traverse City Optimist Club recently awarded $17,250 in grants to twenty local youth-oriented organizations. Grants ranging from $250 to $1,500 were given to the following organizations:

With Covid-19 putting a stop to local school programs that this couple love to support, they wanted to find another way to give back to their community. SUTTONS BAY, Mich. (AP) â An auto repair shop has tuned up the lunch accounts at a northern Michigan school district. To celebrate five years in business, the owners of Mr. Hoxie s Garage wrote a check for $2,033 to cover unpaid school lunch debts in Suttons Bay, near Traverse City.
Kris and Grant Hoxie usually support school arts and sports, but COVID-19 disrupted those programs. Suttons Bay Superintendent Casey Petz says the generous gesture will spread some joy in the Leelanau County community. Kris Hoxie says she s talked to other business owners about making a five-year pledge to the school lunch program.

Suttons Bay – An auto repair shop has tuned up the lunch accounts at a northern Michigan school district.
To celebrate five years in business, the owners of Mr. Hoxie’s Garage wrote a check for $2,033.99 to cover unpaid student lunch debts in Suttons Bay, near Traverse City, the Record-Eagle reported.
“We know what a trying year this has been for so many, especially for the kids, so we wanted to find a way to help relieve some of the stress that comes with attending school on a daily basis,” Grant Hoxie said.
