Wilbur Rea Jones, 86, retired pastor of Morning Star Baptist Church

Wilbur Rea Jones NEWPORT NEWS Our gracious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, called home our beloved, the Rev. Dr. Wilbur Rea Jones, 86, to eternal rest Monday, Feb. 22, 2021. Pastor Jones was a great man of God, servant, wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many he met along the way. His life was an example of Christ’s love and forgiveness in ways too numerous to describe. His charity toward his family, flock and the community was boundless. God truly blessed Pastor Jones with many gifts and talents, which he used daily in the preaching of God’s Word, the administration of the church and life in general.

Two MHS students make District 8 honor band – Gazette Journal

Posted On January 27, 2021 Austin CrockerBradyn Barr During the first week of January, Mathews High School Band members Austin Crocker and Bradyn Barr were busy recording audition tapes for the District 8 Honor Band. Auditions are usually in person at the Grafton School Complex, where hundreds of students compete for spots in the prestigious groups. Barr, a freshman at MHS, was accepted into the concert band as the second chair tubist while Crocker, a senior, was accepted into the symphonic band as the third chair bass clarinetist. Both students needed to show mastery of the chromatic scale, 12 major scales, a prepared etude and one sight-reading example. School divisions involved include Mathews, Gloucester, York, Poquoson, Newport News, Hampton and Smithfield. MHS band director Tim Fary Jr. said he is extremely proud of the students’ work ethic and dedication to their craft, especially during these uncertain times.
